Karatage, denoted by a number followed by "k" indicates purity, or how much of the metal in a piece of jewelry is gold. It refers to the proportion of gold in an alloy out of 24 parts.

24 karat = 100% pure gold. However, it is too soft for everyday wear, so it is alloyed with a mixture of metals like silver, copper, nickel, and zinc to give it strength and durability. 14k gold contains only 58.3% gold, while 18K gold is 18/24 parts gold which is 75% gold. Because 22K has a higher content of gold than 14K or 18K, it has a uniquely rich, bright yellow hue and is the most valuable of them all.
